SSL-Erate is a 3-year coordination and support action that aims to accelerate the uptake of high-quality Solid State Lighting (SSL) technology in Europe by supporting open innovation and bringing validated information to all relevant stakeholders.

Solid State Lighting is a new kind of lighting technology that is predicted to be the next generation of light sources. The old incandescent and fluorescent lamps are replaced by smarter system solutions with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Solid State Lighting is considered to have great potential for Sustainable Development both in terms of energy efficiency and as a development potential for human-centric lighting.

Human-centric lighting is based on the understanding that good lighting is crucial for the wellbeing of humans. The human body is programmed for 12 hours light and 12 hours darkness every day. In modern urban life, this light cycle is deranged due to overconsumption of light. Also, people spend more time indoors and our bodies lack access to natural outdoor light. This can cause stress, sleep deprivation and concentration difficulties.

It is not only the amount of light that matter, it is also about having the right type of light, at the right place, at the right time. One aspect is that blue light makes people awake and is therefore good in the morning, while red light is better in the evenings. With LED-lightning it is possible to vary the colour composition of the light, and is therefore better for human-centric lightning. Thus, with knowledge about appropriate use of lighting it is possible to create better conditions for health and wellbeing.

The aim of SSL-erate is to accelerate the uptake of high-quality SSL technology in Europe by means of open innovation with and by bringing validated information to all relevant stakeholders. A coordinated European effort is required to address the European societal challenges, in particular health and quality of life in an ageing society, energy consumption and resource efficiency, as well to resolve the specific challenges of the Lighting industry. The challenges for the Lighting industry mostly consists of poor SSL quality and inappropriate electronics and lack of information and awareness among citizens. The project aims to mobilize and coordinate efforts and enable lighting solutions with a societal and environmental sustainability perspective, leading to a future in which Europe evolves to the global leadership in SSL systems and solutions.

SSL-Erate creates a collaborative way-of-working among leading cities, lighting clusters and the lighting industry, using open-innovation and smart specialisation principles. An active involvement of various stakeholders is key and is realised through workshops, and also through a web-based SSL-erate innovation platform Lighting for People. The project has three main work packages; Green Business Development, Light in Health and Well-being and Open Innovation.

LU Open mostly work with Green Business Development and Open Innovation and work as an innovation catalyser.
