Future by Lund is an innovation platform where academia and industry come together to solve global challenges with new products and services for future sustainable cities. The project connects actors in an open innovation process with focus on three challenges for tomorrow’s cities: mobility, smart energy systems, and lighting and illumination.
For the first time in the history of mankind, a majority of the world population live in urban areas. The world’s cities will continue to grow as people move from rural areas in search of better jobs and new opportunities to improve their daily lives. As cities grow, so do the opportunities and challenges for the cities. Tomorrow’s cities is therefore seen as a foundation for future economic growth, science and technology and creativity.
Future by Lund is a project that tries to deal with some of the challenges for the future that the municipality of Lund are facing. It is an attempt by the municipality of Lund to do things differently and find new solutions, and take advantage of that one of the best universities in Scandinavia is situated in the municipality. Future by Lund gathers the municipality, Lund University and industry in a collaboration system where academia and industry come together to solve global challenges with new products and services for future sustainable cities. The project connects actors in an open innovation process with focus on three challenges for tomorrow’s cities: mobility, smart energy systems, and smart lighting. The focus areas are all characterized by a high innovation potential and importance for the design of tomorrow’s sustainable cities.
The city and municipality offers a platform for testing and evaluating new smart sustainable techniques and methods, such as investment and construction projects. The concrete target for Future by Lund is to introduce at least one innovation per focus area in the city by summer 2015.
One example of how the project can take concrete forms is by reserving a part of the budget for lighting in schools and daycare center to try new products together with researchers at Lund University.
The role of LU Open is to help in the development of demonstration projects, mainly related to light and mobility. LU Open is also working with getting projects related to the focus areas to Lund and Lund University.
